Ranjankudi Fort Perambalur

The Ranjankudi Fort is also called a Nanjankudikottai. Ranjankudi Fort is located near Perambalur district in Tamil Nadu, India.

History of Ranjankudi Fort

Construction: Believed to be built by the Vijayanagar Nayaka Kings around the 15th century. There's evidence that the area previously housed Hindu temples.

Rulers: The fort has changed hands throughout history. After the Nayakas, the Nawabs of Carnatic controlled it during the 17th century.

Military Significance: The fort was a key site during the 1751 Battle of Valikondah. British troops allied with Mohammed Ali in the war triumphed over French forces supported by Chanda Sahib.

The fort's design was built for defensive purposes during the war. It has a three-tiered structure built with cut stone blocks, an encircling moat, and semicircular bastions that likely held cannons.

Today, the Ranjankudi Fort is not maintained properly but this is one of the tourist destinations in the Perambalur district.
