Thiruvalluvar Statue Kanyakumari
The Thiruvalluvar Statue, or the Valluvar Statue, is a 133-feet tall stone sculpture of the Tamil poet and philosopher Valluvar, author of the Tirukkural, an ancient Tamil work on secular ethics and morality. thw staue is Kanyakumari. Thiruvalluvar is a greatest poet and philosopher of Tamil language. Statue size is 133ft tall as a symbolical representation of the 133 chapters of this famous work Thirukkural.
During the weekends and holiday season queue for the ferry ticket is long and one might need to wait for hours. There is also an option for special ticket to avoid the queue. The magnificent statue is lit at night and one can see the beautiful view from the coast itself. This statue is located next to Vivekananda Rock Memorial Timings 8 AM to 4 PM.
History of Saint Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanyakumari
In 1979, the foundation of Thiruvalluvar statue was laid by the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai. However, the installation and the sculpting started in 1990. The construction was completed in the year if 1999. It was inaugurated by the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu state, Dr. M. Karunanidhi on January 1st 2000.
The period of Valluvar is dated variously by scholars from c. 4th century BCE to c. 5th century CE, based on various methods of analysis, including traditional accounts and linguistics analyses. Valluvanadu" was a Taluk in erstwhile Madras Presidency as part of Malabar District. Currently that area is part of Palakkad and Malappuram Districts of Kerala adjoining Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. The Valluvanadu kings claim that they descended from Pallava Kings and was ruling earlier from Nilgiri area.
